Shining a light on suicide

Website design and build for a suicide prevention campaign for NHS Greater Manchester

Sector Health & Social Care | Not-for-Profit |

NHS Greater Manchester

Creating a much needed resource to deliver vital information and help reduce suicide across the region.

Background

A digital hub for suicide prevention support in Greater Manchester

Suicide is one of the biggest public health challenges facing communities across the UK. To help tackle the issue locally, NHS Greater Manchester commissioned us to design and build the campaign website for Shining a Light on Suicide – a regional campaign focused on reducing suicide across Greater Manchester.

The initiative aims to raise awareness, break down stigma and ensure people can quickly access suicide prevention support and mental health resources when they need them most. The campaign also provides guidance for those worried about someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts, as well as support for people bereaved by suicide.

As the central platform for the campaign, the website needed to act as a trusted and compassionate suicide prevention support website, bringing together information, advice and resources in one accessible place. Today it stands as the only holistic online suicide prevention resource in Greater Manchester, supporting individuals, families and communities across the region.

Challenge

Creating a clear path to help when it matters most

The brief was to design and develop a suicide prevention campaign website capable of supporting multiple audiences during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

The platform needed to clearly guide visitors to the right information depending on whether they were experiencing suicidal thoughts themselves, concerned about someone else, or coping with the loss of a loved one through suicide. The tone and content had to balance sensitivity and clarity while ensuring visitors could quickly find reliable mental health support and suicide prevention resources.

Alongside this, the website needed to establish a strong digital presence for the campaign, promote powerful real-life stories from across the region and provide clear signposting to local and national suicide support services. Accessibility and simplicity were essential to ensure the platform could support users in moments when clarity and reassurance are most important.

Approach

Designing a calm, accessible digital platform for support

Our approach centred on creating a calm, supportive and intuitive digital platform for suicide prevention support that prioritises people’s needs.

At the heart of the design was a clear audience-first structure that helps visitors immediately identify the path most relevant to them. Whether they are seeking help for themselves, supporting someone experiencing suicidal thoughts, or looking for suicide bereavement support, the website quickly guides users to the information and resources they need.

We developed a clean, accessible interface that reflects the campaign’s identity while keeping the focus firmly on essential content and support services. Visitors are guided through clearly defined routes to advice, mental health support resources, and inspiring personal stories that encourage openness and understanding around suicide prevention.

Built to be fast, reliable and easy to maintain, the website allows the campaign team to continue sharing stories, resources and updates from across Greater Manchester.
