Beacon Counselling

Website design and WordPress build for a mental health and wellbeing charity

Beacon Counselling website

Beacon Counselling

Supporting the community’s mental health with an accessible online experience.

Background

A charity doing amazing work in mental health

Beacon Counselling is a long-standing charity providing counselling and emotional wellbeing support to adults, children, young people and communities across Stockport, Greater Manchester and beyond. They needed a digital platform that reflected their compassion, professionalism and commitment to accessible mental health support, replacing an outdated site that no longer supported growth or user needs.

A new website was also required to communicate Beacon Counselling’s merger with Making Space, a national charity delivering mental health, wellbeing, and social care services. Marking an exciting milestone in the organisation’s journey, ensuring the long-term stability of the vital counselling and therapeutic services they provide.

Challenge

A  website that better reflected their approach

The existing website did not deliver an intuitive user experience for the wide range of audiences that Beacon supports, from individuals seeking counselling to schools, workplaces and supporters. The new site needed to be:

  • Clear and easily navigable
  • Fully responsive for all devices
  • Built on a flexible WordPress CMS
  • Highly accessible to users of all abilities
  • Structured to help people find support quickly

Above all, it had to communicate Beacon’s mission with warmth and clarity, while connecting visitors to the right services with minimal friction.

Approach

A thoughtful process to delivering the website

Immersion and definition

We worked with Beacon to understand their audiences; individuals looking for counselling, families, schools, workplaces and donors, mapping key user journeys and pain points.

Expression and activation

The design reflects Beacon’s supportive ethos, using calming colours, easy-to-read typography and consistent visual patterns. Carefully considered layouts ensure that information hierarchy feels natural and welcoming.

WordPress development

The site was developed on a custom WordPress build, giving Beacon control over content updates while ensuring strong performance, security and scalability. Blocks, custom post types and structured templates make the CMS intuitive for editorial use.

Accessibility and usability

Accessibility was central to our development, including clear labels, keyboard-friendly navigation, appropriate colour contrast and assistive-technology-friendly markup, to ensure everyone can access support information with confidence.

Beautiful results

  • Clearly showcases all services: adult, children & young people, schools and workplace support.
  • Makes it easy for users to find and engage with the right help.
  • Is fully responsive across devices and built on a flexible WordPress CMS.
  • Adheres to accessibility best practices to meet the needs of all visitors.
  • Supports Beacon’s mission to grow and reach more people seeking emotional support online.

The redesign helps Beacon better embody its values online, while giving staff an efficient content editing experience and future-proofing the site for growth.
